The American Academy of Pediatrics has a position statement on the use of off-label medication use with children. The purpose of off-label use is to benefit the individual patient. Practitioners use their professional judgment to determine these uses. As such, the term “off-label” does not imply an improper, illegal, contraindicated, or investigational use. Therapeutic decision-making must always rely on the best available evidence and the importance of the benefit for the individual patient.

CSNO supports Proposition 51, which will ensure that school facilities are safe, free from lead and other toxic substances that are harmful to children and impede learning. CSNO feels very strongly that students should have safe, healthy places to learn. We believe that school nurses can advocate for healthy learning environments. We urge school nurses to vote YES on proposition 51!

The 15th Biennial Statewide survey (2013-2015) of California students, 7th graders n=11,286; 9th graders n=14,563 and 11th graders n=13,087 asks, "In the past 30 days, did you miss school for any of the following reasons." Forty-one (41%) of 7th graders n=4,627; 44% of 9th graders n=6,408; and 31% of 11th graders n=4,057 reported missing school for illness related reasons. For every day that a student misses school, the district may loose anywhere from $35 to $48. School nurses can play a critical role in case managing chronic absenteeism. It is encouraged that school nurses examine their respective California Health Kids Survey school site and district data and school absenteeism rates to monitor their school nurse interventions on reducing school absenteeism.
